October 9 - Bending to the Tasks

Well, at least the weather's beautiful.

New Encore behaves for edited page 6 of Psalm 31, and computer for video of Some Stuff: VI. Pastoral Adagio, but, during dinner with Harriet, notice that the Mac is not powering back to 100% (steadily descending to 97-86-95 when being transported powerless from room-to-room before replugging). Google the issue, and evidently no big deal, but then when looking at full screen playback of



VII. Postlude in iMovie before "sharing" computer just turns itself off. Remember this "random shut down syndrome" with old Mac last year and definitely not ready to have it happen again. Not pleased. Fan still runs while everything is dead, suggesting that something is still alive in there. Change computer chord to the old reliable-but-frayed one, just in case that's the issue, and said power cable indicates recharging (yellow vs. green). Try to turn it back on. No good, although white light in front comes on briefly. Wait a few minutes. Call Erling, who's unavailable. Look on the back for charging-up lights. Try again, and this time computer makes the sound of itself turning off, as if it had been on with a dead screan. Try again and it comes back on. Feel like it's playing with my mind. Felt that way last summer, too, with the power-drain-on-sleep problem.... No further problems in the evening, though on edge, prepared for it to happen anytime. Google the random-shutdown syndrome, but posts seem to reference earlier MacBook in 2006.

What will become of us, came the question on bended knee....

April 1 - Fool's Progress

Update. Up early and compose another page (10) of The Song of Solomon: II. I Am the Rose of Sharon, and the new Encore program doesn't crash, so maybe there's hope. Aside from this potentially major problem, really like the update...

Further update. Later in the morning, bring up Job: I, save it in the new format, and program consistently crashes, so, alas, will not be able to use. Such hope. Upshot, at least, is that I've learned how to use the magnification feature which was built into the old version, so there's been some benefit to this exercise, one supposes...

Even further update. Well, the magnification sometimes distorts the notation, so back to point of origin, almost. Have been opening Encore files in a bigger window, however. How's that for triviality?

Spend additional part of the morning re-imputting the last few pages of Psalm 14 "The Fool Has Said" into old program. Gratified that memory (personal, not computer, in this case) is still functioning reasonably well.

And on other computer-conspiracy fronts: for the first time since iPhone has been aquired, iPhoto crashes during an import/delete and pictures have been lost. Not good. So we'll just have to survive without yet additional photos of Mt. Diablo, Shakespeare Hill, Mt. Tamalpais and the Richmond Bridge, Sears Point Mountain. One supposes we'll all survive, at least this...

Just Googled the issue, and this has happened to other users (not the particular pictures of course). Can't help but think that the update that Jason did for the iPhone is responsible. This is now the second example in 24 hours of an update (first above with Encore), where the improvement is absolutely no improvement at all, and indeed a debit. Related has happened with iTunes update from years ago, from which my pictures-attached-to-sound-files has still not fully recovered.

And... the first time iPhone was updated last August, when the process crashed the new laptop and the Sacramento store was initially reluctant to fix the matter the same day...



Before heading out today, begin publication-preparation of Psalm 15 "Who Shall Abide."

Had there not been keyboard-solfege lingering after the Sergei Prokofiev Peter and the Wolf dictation /piano / singing / board harmony with Manuela and William, there would not have been encountering of that hero-once-again Steve Sage, who bears the gift of an Encore upgrade (5.0.5).

errands, it's good... it's very good, although not perfect (one crash thus far, as opposed to often, several), including

fast start
cool running temp (the fan does not kick on as in old version)
unlimited shortcuts on a toolbar that is not prone to "disappear" (as previously)
more sophisticated layout, and ability to magnify and reduce (the former will perhaps reduce typos due to semi-blindness)

Well, maybe yes and maybe no. While writing this, new program suddenly crashes multiple times opening up Song of Solomon: II. I Am the Rose of Sharon. Managed to write a new page (9, beginning a B section in C Mixolydian) previously, however (although not much good, if file doesn't open for more than a moment before crashing -- so we shall see). Also, finish Psalm 14 before this occurs (5 pages total).
